To help younger sailors get access to Scorpion racing.
The Association has created the National Scorpion Foundation as a means of helping younger sailors get access to Scorpion racing.
The National Scorpion Association organises racing events and events to promote the class every year. The Silver Scorpion Travellers' series of Open Meetings sponsored by CraftInsure are spread over the season and over the country. The annual highlight is the Magic Marine Scorpion National Championships which in 2025 are hosted by Penzance SC in Cornwall.
The Mission
to encourage people, particularly young people who may be unable to purchase their own boat, to take part at Scorpion Open meetings and National championships
Objective
To establish a National Scorpion Association Foundation supported by /Main Sponsor/ Sponsorship.
A. Key Stakeholders:
A1. The Royal Yachting Association: To work alongside the RYA Vision to support male and female teams, who may be less privileged, with access to the sport we all enjoy.
A2. /Main Sponsor/: To create a relationship with /Main Sponsor/ that delivers the Foundation as part of their /Main Sponsor's/ social and environmental responsibilities / goals:
(a) by encouraging inclusion for disadvantaged and marginalised youth sailors by encouraging participation based upon egalitarian principles;
(b) by bringing redundant craft back into use reducing waste since such craft otherwise contribute to landfill and
(c) by supporting outdoor activity and mental health through bringing unused resources back into use.
A3. Scorpion Owners: To enable current Scorpion owners, who are unable to use their boats but who do not wish to sell them, to give access to others to enjoy racing their boats under a managed plan. The owners will retain the pleasure of owning and upkeeping their boat to a racing level of maintenance.
A4. The National Scorpion Association: The Association will operate a responsible approach to the deployment of Sponsorship Capital.
A5. Craftinsure: The Scorpion Class's adopted insurer endorses the programme and provides the appropriate cover for boats used under the Foundation's programme.
B. Key Dependencies:
B1. The Foundation will provide insurance cover and entry fees to events under it's programme for the contracted period of time it is being used.
B2. The Foundation will provide transportation support if required for events and accommodation if needed.
B3. A “loan” contract will be agreed to allow the boat owner and foundation user to document the agreement.
B4. The target audience of all backgrounds are young sailors who need a helping hand to access a good boat and take part at Open meeting and Championship level.
B5. The first phase of the Foundation's programme is targeted at such people of a competent standard who would enjoy the experience and opportunity provided whatever their racing results.
C. Key Opportunities:
C1. We have current Scorpion owners who wish to remain owners of their boat but would like the boat to be sailed and enjoyed
C2. The Foundation wishes to give access to a boat which is of a good standard for competitive racing.
C3. To provide a progression for sailing clubs who provide training and support to teams who wish to take part at a higher standard but do not have access to the necessary equipment.
C4. Great boats get a new lease of life and enthusiastic participation and use.
Examples of Foundation initiatives
1. Loan boats were available and used at the 2023 Nationals in Eastbourne.
2. Loan boats will again be available at the 2024 Nationals in Castle Cove, Weymouth.
